Webinar Overview and Objectives

Essential Oils are aromatic compounds that can be found in the flowers, leaves, bark, roots, and fruit of plants and trees.  The therapeutic use of essential oils is often referred to as aromatherapy but the possible uses for essential oils reach far beyond just enjoying their scent.

Once extracted from plant material and tested for purity and potency, essential oils can be used aromatically, topically and in some cases internally.

During the last decade, aromatherapy has made huge advances into traditional health care practices ranging from home health and hospice to ER’s in large academic medical centers.  Although essential oils (EO's) have been used throughout the world for thousands of years in cosmetic, food, and medicinial preparations, most nurses have received little to no training on their therapeutic properties and potential application in both self-care and health-care.

As front line providers of care in a variety of settings, it is essential that nurses stay up to date not only on conventional treatments, but must also have an understanding of current trends in complementary health treatments as well. Essential oils have gained wide-spread popularity with consumers of all ages looking to embrace more natural and holistic health practices and minimize dependence on conventional medical practices.

In this webinar, you will learn the basics of essential oil chemistry, how oils work in the body, and uses for a few of the most popular essential oils.

Objectives:

  1. Define essential oil
  2. List 3 essential oils and the healing properties of the oil
  3. Identify 3 principles of using essential oils safely
